The Noob: Why Here? Why Now?!

It is with a slight apprehension and self-consciousness that I not only created a blog, but am actually writing content to support it…
Noob
The thought that ANYONE would want to read, see, follow, observe, comment, or in anyway participate in my dreams, interests, thoughts, or essentially my life, is exciting and terrifying all at once. I’m sure it all gets better with time, and with time comes experience and with experience comes confidence, blah blah blah… but for now I feel extraordinarily transparent and a little nauseous.

So lets dive right in shall we!

To whomever you may be, wherever you may come from, whatever your interests are,

Hello!

Allow me to share a little about me, after all, isn’t that what this whole blogging thing is all about?!

I am writing this first post, from the comfort and familiarity of my parent’s kitchen, in the house I grew up in, nestled in the outskirts of a small town in the Canadian Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. It’s winter here, and I am home visiting my parents and my sister (who is shortly embarking on a backpacking adventure around SE Asia, but more on that later). I love my hometown. I love the smell of the air, the brightness of the star filled skies, and being surrounded by enormous mountains, which are nearly always covered in snow (yes, even in summer), and collect the most amazing array of colours that never fail to impress me.

Despite my love and appreciation of the beauty of my hometown, I have always been adventurous. As the beloved Disney character Pocahontas once said, I have always longed to see “what’s around the river bend”. This sense of fearless adventurousness is no doubt a product of my parents and their own insatiable quest for experiences and adventure. As a result I have traveled all over the world, from Iqaluit (Nunavut, Canada), all over my own home country of Canada (having lived in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver Island, and Vancouver and explored the rest of it), to Costa Rica, Hawaii, all over the U.S., Australia, England, France, Belize, Jamaica, Haiti, and Africa (Tanzania) to name a few. Each of these places had enriched my life, and helped to shape my perspective and perception of the world, nature, humanity, my inner spirit and provide me with constant sources of inspiration.

world map

It’s a colourful world out there.

In 5 days I will be moving to Paris, France for an internship to work  with a Public Relations firm in the Fashion industry. For those of you who know/follow/are interested in La Mode, you’ll probably also be aware that this marks the beginning of Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, followed by Couture, then Women’s FW in February. This is also the biggest and busiest season in fashion as designers will be showing their fall collections for 2015. I suppose this is why I’m starting this blog now… because my life is starting now. My career, my goals, my fears, my potential… I feel as though I’m on the brink of the great unknown. It hasn’t been an easy road to get here to this point. I am not one of those people who always knew what they wanted and made it happen. My journey to this point has been a chaotic one, full of mistakes and indecision.

I’ve always known what I LOVED to do, but I never knew how to turn that into something that could sustain me; Whether it be emotionally, financially, spiritually, or otherwise. But it seems I’ve found a home amongst the creatives, the eccentrics, the emotional, and the ambitious people that live in the world of fashion.

I want to start this blog to share my inspirations, my triumphs and failures, my efforts, my creativity, and my life. There are few people who are sharing their story of rising into this industry of smoke and mirrors, and I want to share my story, in the hopes of reaching more “lost creatives”just like I was, and helping them see that if a small town Canadian girl who grew up with a bowl-cut, wore overalls, a racoon skin cap and no shoes can find her way to Paris Fashion Week… the world is anyone’s for the taking. ❤

Now for something that needs URGENT clarification…

I am NOT one of those girls who “OMG I like, LOVE fashion. No like seriously, like… I like love all the designer collabs from H&M. I like camped out for Versace. Like…I LOVE fashion”. My eye is angrily twitching just THINKING about it! (I should state here that in no way am I against designer collaborations with H&M… I mean, come on, Isabel Marant was fantastic!… okay, so I can have my girlie fashion nerd moments! 😉 )

Why do I work and love “fashion”? What is fashion to me? Well, I’ll save that for another day, but the short and sweet of it is, I’m an artist, a writer, a creative. I studied as an Art History major, with a minor in History of Film and creative writing at Concordia University in Montreal. I love literature, history, art, and I adore creativity in every shape and form. What drew me to the fashion industry were the seemingly ENDLESS areas for people to be creative in, seas of talented creative people to collaborate with, and ultimately, at the end of the day…we live our lives in it. I love the history of fashion, the history of a garment, the direct correlation between women throughout history, our rights and roles in society, and the clothes we wore. I love that it is the easiest way to express yourself, and the most blatant personal expression of introducing who you are, what you’re about, where you’re going, what you plan to do, and sharing it with (depending on where you live), potentially hundreds, if not thousands of people every single day.

This blog is not a “fashion” blog, nor is it any ONE thing in particular. It is a collection of the multifaceted areas of my life, interests, and of my self.

I hope you will enjoy what you find here.
